I had the chance to photograph a bee experience morning with Restaurants Brighton, capturing the Brighton restaurant Apiary's very first event at the beautiful Sugrue South Downs Bee Tree Vineyard.

It combined nature, food, drink, and a big dose of adventure. Restaurants Brighton asked me to document the experience as part of their ongoing coverage of food and drink across Sussex. It was the perfect opportunity to bring together hospitality photography and brand storytelling.

Bees, Vineyards, and Photography

The morning began with Apiary’s founders, Noemi and Alistair, welcoming guests and introducing them to the world of bees. We suited up in beekeeping gear and walked through the vines to the hives. It was my first time in a beekeeping suit too.

Photographing the bee experience was all about expressions: curiosity, excitement, and a little awe as we learnt how to inspect the hives and even spotted the queen bee. Alistair and Noemi kept everyone at ease, showing us how to inspect a hive and what to look out for. They even explained how the changing sounds of the colony can signal when it’s time to move on, making it an experience for all the senses.

From Hive to Honey

The bee experience finished with a glass of Bee Tree sparkling wine, a chance to relax and discuss the hive inspection and raise a toast to the bees. What makes this experience extra special is that Apiary’s honey doesn’t just stay at the hives. It is used in the restaurant’s kitchen too, from brunch dishes to evening small plates and even in their cocktails.

Shoots like this are the perfect mix, creating images that tell the story of a restaurant and its wider connection to nature and provenance.
